SUPER SPORT GEARING RECOMMENDATIONS

In the Super Sport Brushless System (#3005) manual, the 'GEAR SELECTION' section refers to some specific gear ratio information:

"You will want the final drive ratio in the vehicle to be about 7.3:1 and not less than 6.5:1"

The ratios provided in the manual are correct for on-road "sedan" applications.

For off-road applications, the gearing is much lower as the tires are larger*. We are currently working with the vehicle manufacturers to offer a Gearing Chart that will be more specific. For now, we have the following recommendations:

Most requested gearing numbers:

VEHICLE PINION SPUR
Losi XXX 21-22 78
Losi XXXT 17-18 86
Losi XXX4 21-20 94
Assoc B3 23-24 84
Assoc T3 19-20 90

If your model isn't listed here, then use the following as a general guide for gearing:
  • For Touring Cars, a final drive of 7.30 is a good starting point.
  • For Off-Road Buggys, a final drive of 9.00 is a good starting point.
  • For Off-Road Stadium Trucks, a final drive of 12.30 is a good starting point.

These are gearing recommendations for a fairly large open track. Lower gearing may be needed for: carpet tracks, "tight" tracks, or tracks that have a lot of "short straights" & "hair-pin corners".

The Super Sport Brushless System is not suited for use in the Traxxas E-Maxx. Novak is currently working on a system for the E-Maxx that will accommodate higher voltage. At this time, we do not have pricing information or a release date.

* When dealing with gearing ratios, the higher the ratio number the lower the gearing. For example, a vehicle with a 12.3 final drive ratio is geared lower than a vehicle with a 7.3 ratio.

For more gearing recommendations on specific models, check out the Novak Gear Ratio Chart. Also see the Specs and Gearing addendum for the SS5800 & SS4300.

After installing the Super Sport Motor and ESC in your car it is very important that you complete the ESC setup exactly as stated in 'STEP 5' in the Super Sport Brushless Motor System instruction manual.

Warning: Do not at any time press the 'One-Touch Setup' button while the motor is turning or damage to the ESC may result. You must first complete the ESC setup so that the motor is not turning when the transmitter trigger is in the neutral position.
One-Touch Setup: (Refer to 'STEP 5' in the Super Sport Instruction Manual)

1.

Turn on the transmitter's power. ESC's power switch should be in the OFF position.
2. With the transmitter throttle at neutral, press and hold the ESC's 'One-Touch Setup' button. While holding the button down, slide the ESC's power switch to the ON position.
3. Continue holding the ESC's set button until the Super Sports status LED turns SOLID RED.
4. As soon as the LED turns SOLID RED, release the ESC's set button.
5. After releasing the button, pull the transmitter trigger to the full throttle position and hold it there until the ESC's status LED turns SOLID GREEN.
6. Next, push the transmitter trigger to the full brake/reverse position and hold it there until the status LED starts FLASHING GREEN.
7. Return transmitter throttle to the neutral position. The AMBER, GREEN, and RED status LED's will momentarily turn on SOLID indicating that the proper programming has been completed.
8. After couple of seconds the status LED will come on SOLID RED indicating that the ESC is in neutral and ready to go.
